Learn Vocative in Serbian & Croatian

Vokativ

The addressing case. Used only when calling out to someone directly — their name, a title, or a greeting. It doesn't function as part of the sentence structure; it simply identifies the person you're speaking to.

Case 5Vokativ

Vocative

No question word — it's used when calling or addressing directly

Used for

  • Directly addressing a person, animal, or personified thing
  • Used in speech, exclamations, and when calling out to someone
  • In English we don't change the word, just add a comma: 'Hello, Peter!' — in Serbian/Croatian the name itself changes form

Examples

Zdravo, Petre!

Hello, Peter!

Ćao, Milice!

Hey, Milica!

Dođi, sine!

Come, son!
